What is it?
The City of Austin Economic Development Department GBE Division is partnering with UT Blackstone Launchpad, Pune Fashion Week, and Austin Pune Sister City Initiative to host a hackathon centered on Smart City solutions and international cooperation. Pune, India and Austin, TX are both cities striving to overcome unique challenges that can be answered by innovative technology. The hackathon is a creative sprint where teams with diverse backgrounds come together, in person or virtually, in order to solve Smart City themed issues. Teams will have 24 hours to create the best solution possible to their chosen problem statement. All background and skill levels are welcome to participate. Whether this is your 1st hackathon or 100th, everyone is encouraged to join.
How does it work?
You can register with a group of friends or as an individual participant; teams must have at least one Puneite and one Austinite. Preexisting teams that are missing an international partner will have one team member meeting the criteria assigned to their team. This hackathon is a 24 hour sprint for teams to create the best possible solutions. Teams will be partnered together prior to the start of the hackathon. Team members will be notified the day before the event with the names of their teammates and will be asked to decide on a team name; you can being communicating with your team at that time. On the day of the event you will arrive to the location prior to the start time (early arrival is encouraged so you can link up with your team and find a space to work). Participants will connect with their internationally based team members using Zoom; a communication platform that offers access to virtual whiteboard, instant messaging, and video conferencing. All equipment needed such as laptops, notebooks, computers, or anything else is up to participants to bring to the hackathon. Teams will be given 24 hours to work their problem; mentors will be on sight and interacting with teams to provide help where needed.
Once the time is up, teams will submit all work and the judging panel will begin evaluating the projects. Winners will be determined once judges have thoroughly reviewed all submissions. Winning teams will be announced and awards will be given to the top performing participants.
How can I participate?
The hackathon is open to people living in America and India. Teams are limited to a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 4. Teams are required to have at least one member from India and one member from America in order to facilitate bi-national collaboration. Registration can be completed by filing out the form by clicking here, participation is completely free of charge.
Once completed, your registration will be reviewed and teams will be made prior to the event date (if you are registering with a friend and would like to be on the same team please annotate so on the registration form). Teams will be made on a number of considerations such as; problem statement selected, personal expertise, and years of experience. Teams will be put together so everyone has an equal starting point and diverse level of expertise; participants will be largely paired on your selected problem statement categories to ensure everyone shares a common goal.
